Gas vs electric, worked out honestly.
Choose what you’d run on gas. Every number on this page comes from the assumptions you can see and change, so set them to match your bill.
How we work it out
- Showers run at 9 L/min at 40 °C from 15 °C cold water; other hot taps add a quarter on top.
- Heating water takes 4.186 kJ per litre per °C. LP gas holds 13.8 kWh per kg.
- Electric storage geyser: element near 100%, plus the standing loss above. Gas instantaneous geyser: 84% of the gas reaches the water, no standing loss.
- Stove: a 1.5 kW average draw while cooking. An electric plate puts about 70% of its heat into the pot, a gas burner about 40%.
- Heater: 2 kW of heat either way; both put all of it into the room.
- CO₂: 1.04 kg per kWh from the grid, 3.0 kg per kg of LP gas burnt. A month is 30 days.
- Load off your inverter: geyser element 3 kW, stove 2.5 kW, heater 2 kW.
